How do you get into the assistant route?
The entry route is narrower than social media makes it look, but it is also faster and cheaper than a full electrical trade path.

- Duration: 4 to 8 weeks of focused product and process training can be enough for a junior support role
- Entry requirement: Grade 12 helps, but the real filters are attention to detail, basic computer use, decent written communication, and the ability to follow process
- First step: learn one inverter brand, one monitoring portal, and one sample handover pack before you apply anywhere
That route makes sense for someone who is organised, phone fluent, and not scared of data entry, site photos, and repetitive admin that actually matters. It is especially useful if you are in a small town or township where a company needs a person who can do field support, file work, and basic commissioning admin without burning time.
It also suits the reality of load shedding and patchy connectivity. You do not need a magical setup. You need a phone with a usable camera, a laptop that can handle spreadsheets, and enough data to upload files without crying every second day. A basic midrange laptop is enough for the admin side. The work is more about consistency than expensive gear.
What does the electrician route look like?
The electrician route is a different game entirely.
For the electrician route:
- Cost: there is no tidy short course number, because this runs through apprenticeship, trade training, practical assessment, and registration costs
- Duration: much longer, usually years rather than weeks
- Entry requirement: a formal electrical pathway, not a weekend certificate
- First step: start the recognised apprenticeship or learnership that leads to trade testing and registration
This path leads toward registered Installation Electrician or Master Installation Electrician status, which allows the person to legally inspect, connect, and sign off the electrical work. It is slower, heavier, and more technical. It also has a different ceiling.
The assistant route is not a cheap version of electrician work. It is a separate role, which is why it exists. Companies need people who can keep projects clean, documented, and client-ready while the licensed trade handles compliance and electrical sign-off.
How do you tell if a solar academy is legit?
Ask the boring questions. The ones that save you money.
Before you pay a fee-charging course provider, ask:
- Is this industry training, a registered skills programme, or an electrical qualification?
- What exactly does the certificate allow me to do?
- Does the course include practical work on monitoring portals, site files, or commissioning documents?
- Who signs off the assessment?
- Do you place learners with an actual installation company, or is the training only classroom-based?
- Does the course claim to let me wire a DB or issue a CoC? If yes, walk away unless it is part of a real electrical trade route.
If a provider cannot explain the difference between product training and a legal electrical qualification in plain language, they are selling noise. A serious academy will say exactly what its certificate is, what it is not, and where it fits in the industry. Anything else is brochure theatre.

Solar keeps growing because every installation needs more than labour on a roof. It needs records, applications, portal setup, client documentation, and a final file that does not collapse the first time somebody asks a warranty question.
