Thinking About What To Do After Matric
Thinking about what to do after matric can be scary; where to begin? Life for school children is pretty routine and “safe” but after matric matriculants have to face the “big world out there.”
Compiling a list of questions should help school children who are soon to matriculate gather their thoughts and think of even more appropriate questions which they should be dealing with and answering.
Here is a list of questions to get matrics or their parents started:
Do I really want to study further after matric?
If I study further, is there a good chance I will find a job when my studies are over?
What can I study?
If I am going to university, should I go to university in another town or to a university in my own town?
Will my parents be able to afford my university fees for all the years that I will need to go to university to complete my degree?
How can I earn money in my spare time to help my parents pay for my studies?
Can I apply for a bursary for my studies?
Where can I get a loan for my studies?
Am I responsible enough to study hard if I decide to study at home?

Is it worth doing correspondence courses where I won’t get a degree or a diploma?
If studying a particular subject or for a particular degree doesn’t work out, what would my second choice for further studies be?
Should I take a year off before starting to study?
If I take a year off after matric, what will I do during that year?
Can I learn a lot on the Internet for free?
What types of things can I learn about on the Internet?
Will I be able to make money from what I learn on the Internet?

How long should I spend looking for a job before I decide to rather try working for myself?
Am I determined to work hard if I decide to try working for myself?
How much money do I need to earn each month?
Will the money I earn be enough for future expenses like having a family?
Where can I look for jobs?
What types of jobs would I be good at?
Are there many jobs for matrics in South Africa?
What if I hate the job I get?
How do I apply for jobs?
How will I get to work and back?
What will I have to wear to work?
What if I don’t get on with the people I work with?
Will I continue living at home for a while, or will I move out?
If I continue living at home for a while will I be able to help my parents with my living expenses if they expect me to?
If I move out, what are all the things I will need to pay for?
Will I miss my family and friends if I move to another town?
What would my reasons be if I decide to move to another country?
How will I keep fit after matric?
What are other matrics I know going to do after matric?
