Does Matric Prepare You for Life After School?

If you finish matric and ask yourself “What now?” then, no, Matric does not prepare you for life after school. Also, matric does not prepare you for life after school if you ask yourself any of the following questions after matriculating: How do I choose what to study after matric? What must I do to try and get financial assistance for further studies? What must I do to find a job after matric? How long should I look for a job before rather starting my own business from home? Interview with 2011 Lilyfontein Matric Headboy, Ryno Jooste

The 2011 headboy or head leader of Lilyfontein School near East London, South Africa was my cousin Ryno Jooste. My sons also attend Lilyfontein school, and are currently just finishing off their grade 7 and grade 8 years at Lilyfontein. In just a few years’ time my sons will also be doing their matric at Lilyfontein. I interviewed Ryno about his matric year, about his time spent at Lilyfontein, and about his future plans. Thinking about what to do after matric can be scary; where to begin? Life for school children is pretty routine and “safe” but after matric matriculants have to face the “big world out there.” Compiling a list of questions should help school children who are soon to matriculate gather their thoughts and think of even more appropriate questions which they should be dealing with and answering.
